Anxiety

Anxiety affects us all.

Life stresses like planning for our children’s college or caring for an ailing parent can cause anxiety. It’s a normal feeling. It’s a problem and detrimental to your long term health when it becomes high and chronic.

Constant stress can alter our neurotransmitters, adrenal function, gastrointestinal tract and a variety of other physiologic processes. The usual strategy to treat chronic significant anxiety is a serotonin re-uptake inhibitor such as Prozac. However these medications have a variety of potentially fatal consequences such as the neuroleptic malignant syndrome, serotonin syndrome, and stomach ulcers. They can commonly cause a drop in libido and significant weight gain.

Fortunately, there are alternatives. It’s very common for the sensation of anxiety to be caused by a disruption in neurotransmitter systems such as serotonin and Gamma amino butyric acid (GABA). A useful strategy to heal these systems is with targeted amino acid therapy. Under my supervision the use of the amino acid 5-Hydroxy-Tryptophan, which converts to serotonin, can lead to a dramatic decrease in the symptoms of anxiety. With targeted amino acid therapy there are no potentially fatal side effects, weight gain or decrease in sex drive.
